Spotlight search not working properly?

By charly2 On Monday, November 17, 2008

Every so often, Apple’s Spotlight feature (upper right hand corner of OS X) stops working.

If your Spotlight search is not working properly, it’s most likely because Spotlight has a broken index –this how to fix it:

  1. Click on Finder on your dock.
  2. Click on Applications in Finder.
  3. Double-click on the “Utilities” folder.
  4. Find and double-click on the “Terminal” application.
  5. You should see the Terminal application start, and be dumped at a textual screen prompt.
  6. At that prompt, simply type: “sudo mdutil -E /” and press Return.
  7. You’ll be prompted for a password, enter your Mac’s password (the same you enter for Software Updates, etc).
  8. It may take a couple of minutes as it reindexes your Spotlight database.
  9. Once it’s done, try Spotlight (you can use the keyboard shortcut Command + Space to get there quickly); and it should be working properly!
